Sunset views in Jacó, Costa Rica
With year-round breaks perfect for surfing, a hopping nightlife scene and gorgeous sunset views, Jacó is one of Costa Rica’s most popular beach destinations.
True, it is not known for being Costa Rica’s most beautiful beach, but during sunset in Jacó, I beg to differ.
Located in the Pacific Coast province of Puntarenas, it’s also the nearest beach to San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital city, making it a convenient destination for the majority of visitors who fly into the country’s main airport. This also makes it one of my favorite weekend escapes while I’m living in Costa Rica!
In addition to a wide variety of lodging, dining and nightlife options, Jacó also offers the majority of the adventure and nature activities that make Costa Rica such a special place to visit. From horseback riding and hiking to waterfalls, to ATV tours and ziplining, to deep-sea fishing and kayaking, whatever vacation activities you are looking for, you will find them in Jacó. It’s also a great destination to view unique wildlife. On a recent visit I had an encounter with a rhinoceros beetle.
The most popular activity in Jacó with the locals is without a doubt surfing. Along with nearby Playa Hermosa, Jacó is a renowned surfing destination due to its long stretch of uninterrupted surf, warm water, and year-round breaks.
Surfing and jungle exploring aside, my favorite activity in Jacó is sunset viewing.
Sunset views in Jacó, Costa Rica
The sunset time in Jacó is consistent year-round, as is the case throughout Costa Rica, setting between 5:30 and 5:50 p.m.
For the best sunset views in Jacó, Costa Rica, there’s only one place to head – the beach. Playa Jacó is a 2.5 mile strip of sandy beach, flanked by cliffs and jungle. From the beach, you also have a clear view of Tortuga Island, filled with wildlife and even more pristine beaches.
Anywhere along the beach will offer a stunning sunset. If you are looking for mountains in your sunset view, head to the North end of the beach near Playa Herradura. From here you will also be able to see Isla Palma.
If cocktail sipping is on your agenda during a sunset view, head to the South end of the beach. Relax at Tiki Bar and take in a view that includes palm trees as well as the setting sun.
My personal favorite view of sunset in Jacó is near the ocean’s edge. Your view will be uninterrupted apart from the occasional surfer who is taking advantage of the last few minutes of daylight to hang ten.
There’s no better time at Playa Jacó than sunset. It will truly change your view of the myth that Playa Jacó is anything less than a beautiful beach.
Looking for somewhere to stay in Jacó? My favorite hotel in the area is DoceLunas.
