It has been a long and painful four years. When It has been a long and painful four years.

When I left Florida at 24 to move overseas I didn’t know that the journey of living and working abroad would turn me into an ambassador. But you learn very quickly as you move through the world that your very presence makes you a representative of the land you come from.

While there’s been much in my country’s history that I’ve disagreed with, I wasn’t prepared for how painful it would be to look people who once admired my country in the eye and reassure them that the values we hold dear still remain.

It was painful to be in Mexico and be asked to tell my friends and family back home that Mexicans are in fact nice people.

It’s been painful to be in Europe, a continent that has long lauded my grandfather’s generation for the role they played in ending a world war, and hear our leader compared to their worst dictators.

It’s been painful to be in Australia, listening to women debate the merits of taking 9 or 12 months off for maternity leave, knowing how many women back home have no options for paid leave at all.

It’s been painful to be in Papua New Guinea and be asked how my country could go from having a black president to having a president who says disparaging words about all those who don’t look like him.

There have been so many moments of pain these past four years on the road, but today a new era arrives. @joebiden represents the best of our country - compassion, empathy, team work and strategy.

And today, instead of shedding tears over a man’s derogatory comments about my body parts, I got to sit on the couch with my mom and shed tears over my fellow Californian @kamalaharris becoming our first female Vice President.
